PBGV DNA BANK
at the
University of Missouri

Canine genetic research is increasing and the Canine Genome Map is expanding. In an effort to take advantage of the opportunities this presents, the PBGVCA with support from the PBGV Health and Rescue Foundation has established a DNA Bank. Your participation will help to identify, and hopefully, someday eliminate, genetically based diseases in the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. Our objectives for this project are as follows

Provide researchers with the ideal family groups needed for research.

Allow more rapid progress when research goals are identified for the breed.

Reduce the time needed to identify genetic markers.

Provide breeders with the information they need to make wise breeding choices.

Your participation is critical to our success in this endeavor. Currently, the banked DNA is being used in research on such diseases as epilepsy, lens luxation, and glaucoma. Conceivably, future research may be developed to determine genetic markers for virtually every genetic disease of concern to our breed. Possibilities for DNA research in the future are limitless. For this research to be even more effective, we need to bank DNA samples from our current generations of PBGVs as well as those of the future.
