In 1983 a PBGV puppy named Alexander was purchased in Canada by George and Betty Barth from the United States. He stole the hearts of many and gained recognition in articles in dog magazines after he won a Supermatch a week after being brought to the states. The next year the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Club of America was founded. In the August/September 1986 club newsletter it was reported that there were nearly 70 known PBGVs in the US although only 24 were registered. By December 1988 there were 200 PBGVs registered with the AKC as reported in the Saber Tails.

In the fall of 1989 what is thought to be the first PBGV to be found in a shelter was the topic of a letter to the Saber Tails editor. He was adopted by a shelter volunteer. She knew about PBGVs because she had seen pictures of her cousin’s dogs. There was a discussion about forming a national rescue committee in May 1990 at a board meeting. One of the directors was appointed by the president to form a committee which would develop procedures for the handling of rescues on a local level. Guidelines for rescue were submitted to the board in the fall of 1990 and approved during the winter of 1991. In May 1991 a motion was approved to set up the rescue committee immediately and begin fundraising efforts. Four months later six PBGVs were turned over to rescue. There were three 9 month old puppies and three 18 month olds. All had been neglected. They had not received veterinary care, adequate nutrition or grooming. PBGV rescue and club members took action. Funds were needed. A call for help to the membership in the form of a raffle raised enough to donations to cover the rescue expenses and establish a rescue fund. Within two months the rescues were thriving and off to new loving homes.

PBGV Rescue continues to serve the needs of the unfortunate PBGVs that need care and new homes. Your donation to PBGV Rescue enables us to have the funds available to provide healthcare and rehabilitation to allow these dogs to find forever homes.
